Marshal James Flagg, die kort voor zijn pensionering staat, hoort dat zijn oude vijand, de outlaw Big John McKaye, terug is in zijn regio en dat hij van plan is een overval te plegen. Onderweg, op jacht naar McKaye, wordt Flagg gevangen genomen door McKaye’s bende. Flagg komt er achter, dat McKaye niet langer de leider van de bende is, maar de jongere Waco. Samen besluiten Flagg en Mackaye het tegen Waco en zijn bende op te nemen.
